Using Magic Wand in Gutenberg

In the Gutenberg block editor, Magic Wand appears as a wand icon in the block toolbar on supported text blocks. Click it to open the AI Generate modal for the selected block.

Using Magic Wand

  1. Click on a supported text block (paragraph, heading, list, quote, code, or preformatted).
  2. In the block toolbar, click the wand icon (sparkle/magic wand).
  3. A modal opens with:
    • Prompt textarea
    • Template selector (Rewrite, Expand, Fix Grammar & Spelling, Summarize, Generate FAQs, Simplify Tone, Translate, or Custom prompt)
    • Advanced Settings (provider, model, temperature)
  4. Choose a template or enter a custom prompt.
  5. Click Generate (or press Ctrl+Enter).
  6. Review the compare/diff view, then click Apply to update the block, Re-generate to try again, or Cancel to discard.

Per-Action Settings

In the Advanced Settings section of the modal, you can override:

  • Provider — switch between configured AI providers for this request
  • Model — select a specific text model
  • Temperature — lower is more focused, higher is more creative

Keyboard Shortcuts

There is no global keyboard shortcut to open Magic Wand. Open it from the block toolbar on a supported block.

AI Writer Toolbar Button

In addition to block-level Magic Wand, there is a SmartyPress AI Writer button in the top editor toolbar. This provides quick access to:

  • Generate Title — create an SEO-optimized title
  • Generate Content — generate full article content
  • Generate Excerpt — create a post summary
